Paranormal Investigation: North Adams, Massachusetts - 2007

Case Report

(October 7, 2007) The ISIS Paranormal Investigations team set out to conduct an investigation after being contacted by the sister of a woman living in North Adams, Massachusetts with complaints about paranormal activity and unexplained events. The woman, (herein to be identified as Nicole to protect the client’s identity per her request) desired an investigation to look into the strange events she was experiencing. Nicole has been living at the location for nearly a year, and estimates the age of the location to be several hundred years old, having been erected in 1869-1870. Nicole also estimates that the location has had at least eight or nine owners since the mid-1970s. No prior clergy had been contacted before Nicole contacted our team; and the home had never been blessed to the best of her knowledge.

Physical/paranormal complaints reported by the client included unexplained nausea, headaches, difficulty sleeping, restlessness, and “shakiness” (possibly associated with anxiety). Nicole also informed our team that she often sensed a male spirit or presence, one that was angry: primarily located in the upstairs portion of her home. Shadows have also been seen in the same location; Nicole has heard unexplained banging and has felt the bed shaking on various occasions. Downstairs neighbors living below Nicole have told her that they have had paranormal experiences as well and could hear footsteps walking around upstairs in Nicole’s home when no one was at the location. Nicole further asserts that she senses the angry male presence primarily in her bedroom or within the hallway upstairs. According to Nicole, her child has also complained about paranormal events.

The child continually reports to her mother that she has an unseen “friend” named “Chris.” The child would constantly point into the corner of her bedroom and ask her mother, “Who’s that?” When her mother questioned her about it, the child said, “Momma, Chris in trouble, Chris fell down.” The mother asked her, Where? The child urged Nicole again by stating that Chris was in trouble, Chris fell down. Again, the mother asked her where. The child then pointed to the floor of the bedroom, near her bed. Of course, when Nicole looked down there was nothing to be seen.

The child also frequently reports seeing a “tall, scary man,” upstairs. When in the living room of the location, the child was playing with toys when she got up and ran to Nicole. The ball in the living room then began to roll across the living room into the hallway, turned around and came back into the living room. The child was extremely upset and said, “Momma…ball scary.” On one occasion, Nicole was walking down the upstairs hallway and the child pointed up to the ceiling and said, “Momma…tall man.” The child then feared going down the stairs to the lower level of the home and backed away. The child repeated: “Momma, tall man…scary.” Nicole turned around and saw a shadow figure, she quickly grabbed the child, and brought her downstairs; she described the shadow as something that could be seen through, and it was floating just over her head where her daughter was previously pointing to.

Nicole reported to us that on a number of occasions when she prepares for bed,paranormal activity commences: she lies down and the bed will begin to shake. She reports sometimes feeling like something is breathing cold air behind her neck. She also reports seeing orange-reddish orbs in her bedroom. After contacting our team we advised Nicole to begin documenting her experiences in as much detail as possible until we could arrive on the investigation date. Nicole noted that on October 4 around 10:45 pm she was in bed when she felt the cold breath again, it then traveled over her face and it took her breath away. Nicole told us: .

“I couldn’t breathe. It felt like I was paralyzed like I could not get out of bed at first. Then I sat up and came downstairs. I have been sleeping downstairs ever since.”

The paralysis that Nicole experienced lasted for a few minutes before she rushed downstairs.

Nicole placed a family Bible on the bed to feel better about the situation. Nicole told us about hearing something walking “above her head,” slow, steady footsteps, and then it stopped in front of the computer in her Master Bedroom. She heard the faint words “hello.” Nicole reports hearing crackling, and that the “hello” sounded like an old recording or a record player. The client also reports smelling sulfur in both the Master bedroom and the hallway.

Nicole’s sister also witnessed events at the location while having an extended stay with her sister; she remained at the location for three days out of an intended ten day stay, then left and returned home to her parents “because she just couldn’t stay” at the location or sleep there. When Nicole’s sister first wrote to us she explained:

I was visiting my sister in North Adams; the first night I was there I kept waking up in the middle of the night. I thought I was just restless. I later found out my other sister also had trouble sleeping in the room I slept in. I told my sister the next day and she said, “That’s nothing” but did not elaborate. She went to work and I watched her children. As I was preparing breakfast, one of the children pointed to the ceiling and asked: “Who’s that?” She repeated: “Who’s that?” I told her I did not know because I could not see anything.

Nicole’s sister felt eerie whenever she was near the closet in the master bedroom, had felt cold breathing near her while in the room, and also elaborated further about her short stay at the location:

I was afraid to sleep in the room…All night long I heard breathing, like a child running up stairs and the heavy foot-steps of an adult following closely behind. Over the course of the night I felt like someone was looming over the bed. I had the same feeling the next night. I felt something grab me that night.

Nicole has experienced some considerable life stressors before the onset of activity. After leaving a domestically violent relationship, and moving into another state, Nicole attempted to settle down with her children into a better life. Unfamiliar with the new home, Nicole believes that she wrote off more minor paranormal events in an attempt to rationalize said occurrences. Nicole does not currently assert any religious affiliations, and recent renovations to the property have been completed on the outside of the location. Finally, the client did attempt to cleanse the house by burning sage and attempting to protect herself via white light visualization techniques.

EVPs

A total of seventeen EVPs were captured at the location, ranging from A to D. One particularly interesting EVP was captured while we were interviewing the client. The EVP was captured while we were discussing the Bible that the client had left on the bed in the Master bedroom. The EVP is clearly a woman singing what sounds like opera. None of the investigators or client heard the singing during the interview. Examine the EVP captures for this case in our EVP gallery.

Temperature Fluctuations

At 1:50 pm there is a noted temperature fluctuation in the kitchen area of the home during the process of the client interview. The temperature dropped from 72F to 60F.

Photographic Evidence

The team captured an image of a male in the master bedroom of the location. The latter capture correlates with Nicole’s child’s complaints of frequently seeing a “tall, scary man.” It also correlates with the assertion that Nicole heard something walking “above her head across the ceiling in her room,” and then it stopped in front of the computer in her Master Bedroom. She then heard the faint words “hello.”

Pendulum Findings

12:00 pm – the pendulum pulled toward toys in the living room. This correlates with the female energies sensed by Brian Evans at 12:03 pm in the same location.

12: 30 pm - positive pendulum readings for unusual energy in the child’s bedroom over the bed. This correlates with experience reported by the client.

EMF Readings with No Detected Mundane Origin

12:03 pm - Audible EMF detection in front of the downstairs bathroom of the location with the device that converts electromagnetic fields to audible sound waves.

12:06 pm - Audible EMF detection in downstairs hallway of the location.

12:15 pm - Audible EMF detection in upstairs hallway directly in front of the Master bedroom.

12:40 pm – EMF reading of 3 mG captured in child’s bedroom near the bed. At 12:45 another EMF reading is captured: 5 mG at the same location.

Team Experiences

NOTE: None of our investigators are given any information about the case prior to our visit to the location. Our investigators are paired up in teams, but while the investigation is in process, the team is not allowed to discuss any psychic sensations they may experience with other investigators. The latter efforts are so that our team does not develop preconceived notions about anything going on at the location and to avoid evidence contamination.

Investigator Robin Evans

12:35 pm - Investigator Robin Evans was violently shoved half way across the room by an unseen force while using the pendulum in the Master bedroom. Three other investigators witnessed the event. Robin notes that she saw a white orb on the wall just before she was pushed. This correlates with Nicole’s assertion that she had seen orbs in the Master bedroom.

Investigator Sathish Victor

12:09 pm – Sathish is standing in the living room at the location and senses the presence of a dark male spirit on the stairs. Sathish felt a tightening of his chest and found it somewhat difficult to breathe.

12:45 pm – in the child’s bedroom upstairs, Sathish notes that he feels something grabbing his arm.

At 1:00 pm – Sathish makes a note about how he senses the male presence again: “I saw him in low light where everything was black behind him and his face was greenish due to the light.” This notation correlates with one of the photos captured in the upstairs of the location.

Psychic Artist Angela Kaufman

1:10 pm - Angela reports feeling unexplained anger, discomfort, and agitation in the upstairs bedroom area.

At 12:29 pm - Angela senses the presence of a small boy in the upstairs of the location.

At 12:35 pm - Angela sensed a heavy presence walking behind her in the Master bedroom.

At 1:15 pm - Angela saw a shadow move across the ceiling in the living room with no mundane explanation in terms of source. Angela notes that she sensed the presence of a male spirit, possibly and older man and she also sensed the spirit of a child. Angela noted that she believed the older man spirit to be cruel, possibly abusive, and very negative. Angela also notes that she sensed the male spirit in the upstairs hallway, the Master bedroom, and in the child’s room. Angela had no foreknowledge of the events that Nicole and her family were experiencing as the interview was conducted last: after all other aspects of the investigation were completed.

Psychic Artist: Brian Evans

12:03 – Brian notes that he senses the presence of a little girl spirit sitting on the carpet by the toys in the living room. This notation may correlate and explain the experience reported by Nicole pertaining to the toy ball rolling around in the living room and hallway seemingly unaided.

Conclusion: Location: Haunted.

The team members had several similar experiences that Nicole reported, seventeen EVPs were captured, and a few photos were also captured at the sight. The life stressors endured by Nicole may have something to do with the onset of activity. Increased levels of stress and anxiety are powerful energies, ones that negative entities or spirits can draw from in order to act or manifest. Thus, the vicious cycle begins – once activity begins, the homeowners or residents are likely to become more upset and anxious, thereby providing more energy for the entities to draw from.

Our team conducted a cleansing of the location upon the request of the resident. The cleansing was partially successful for a few days time. Our most recent contact with the client’s sister has revealed that the activity continues.
