Case Report

On June 4, 2006, a team of six female investigators and one male investigator conducted an investigation in Plattsburgh, New York. The ISIS team set out to investigate a home in Plattsburgh, New York after being contacted by the occupants of the location. Plattsburgh is situated amid scenic woods and mountains, just 45 minutes from Canada. Three people currently live in the residence, two adults and one, young female child and the location has been recently renovated.

Our initial contact with the occupants revealed that the house was built in 1829. It was formerly an old, brick home and farm. The current family has lived there for 8 years and the paranormal activity in question had started approximately 5 years ago, when renovations had started. The entire house has been remodeled, and only the brick walls remain from the original home built on the site. The initial complaints of paranormal activity include electric fire alarms going off in the middle of the night for no reason, and the sound of footsteps running around the kitchen table. The client has reported that they have seen "eight children running around the kitchen table" and "two children swinging on the swing set" in her yard. The client has also experienced cold chills, and has felt unseen things pass through her on random occasions.

The Interview

The occupants' have a religious affiliation that is Catholic. The house has never been blessed and although the home was investigated by another group, the group has since disbanded and merged with another, and the client did not receive a report on any of the findings conducted during that investigation. The occupant did report that the former group had a psychic come into the home and that the psychic reported, "a feeling that the location was something else before it was a house.” Other than the first paranormal group, the psychic, and our investigation, no other prior media or teams were involved with the case.

The oldest male occupant was diagnosed with a rare disease, just two years after moving into the location. Interestingly, during the interview the home owners revealed that they also have a tenant and that the tenant's daughter had been diagnosed with a rare condition, after living in the location for a little over two years. (The conditions will not be revealed in order to protect the identity of the individuals involved.) The occupants report that none of the experiences they are enduring occurred immediately upon moving in and state that the unusual activity began about two years after moving into the location.

The family has lived in the home under investigation for approximately eight years. The home consists of fifteen rooms, not including the basement. Remodeling of the home began in the year 1989 and renovation was completed in 2004. Everything except the home's outer shell was replaced and part of the original basement remains. Interestingly, despite the complete renovations to the home, the occupant complained that the house is always cold.

The occupant took it upon herself to do some research about the location. She reasserted that the home was built in 1829 and that she managed to trace the deed back to that date. The deeds were difficult to read however, and she can only assure our team of deeds traced to 1846. The home had been owned by six owners total-including the current family. Finally, old newspapers dating back to the year 1914 were discovered, still intact in the home, though significantly yellowed with age.

The occupants expressed no prior interest in occult activities before the paranormal activity began. They also report that they attempted to use the Ouija board a couple of times and that they performed one séance in the location after paranormal activity occurred.

During the interview, the occupants revealed that their child is afraid to sleep at night. According to the occupants, at least six people have heard unexplained sounds. Witnesses have heard what sounds like people running through the house, (the most frequent sound reported) and the occupant reports that the sound on the floors are much like someone is jumping up and down on the floors. Frequently, the sound occurs at night when everyone is settled down to sleep. Additionally, the fire alarms have gone off without explanation; the sound of picture frames scraping on the wall as they swing to and fro without cause can be heard; the cupboards opening and shutting by themselves; and strange banging on the floors.

The female occupant reports that she sometimes has the terrible feeling that "something has passed through her" and she feels like someone is watching her while she is trying to sleep. She has also, on one occasion, felt as if "someone or something had brushed against her skin." Further, the client often finds her personal items moved about when no one has had access to them. Additionally, the household pets, particularly the dogs have acted erratically, growling at one another when they normally get along.

The occupants report seeing "something black," possessing no shape or form that moved across one of their windows, moving from left to right outside the premises. The window where the "black, shapeless form" was seen is directly in front of a tree and there is no room for a person to fit between the tree and window.

The occupant also report seeing two children swinging on their swing set in their back yard. The event occurred in "broad daylight" and the occupant was trying to read the newspaper when she caught sudden movement out of the corner of her left eye. When the occupant turned her head to look directly at the unexplained activity, there was nothing there. Trying to brush off what she had seen as a "trick of the eye" the occupant then attempted to return to reading the newspaper, only to see the movement reoccur. She describes the children as having "dark hair" and they were both wearing red and white clothing." Further, the occupant contends that one was a boy and the other was a girl. The occupant then explained that she was not the only individual to witness the event and that an associate of hers also saw two children swinging on the swing set. The occupant expressed her upset with the situation and admitted that the event frightened her.

The occupants have experienced some difficulty with electric appliances: electric fire alarms go off without cause, lights flicker frequently, the television goes out and shows nothing but static frequently, and the family goes through a lot of light bulbs. The occupant complained that she had a nightmare about one of the former owners of the house, a woman, during an afternoon nap and when she awoke she found that the television was on and that there was nothing but static. Our team can confirm this: when we arrived, the television showed nothing but static the entire time we were on location. Finally, the client reports having several messages on her answering machine that are nothing but static sounds.

The nightmare: the occupant dreamed that she read an ad in the newspaper and called the telephone number. An old woman answered the phone and asked her, "Where do you live?" In the dream, the occupant told the woman where she lived and the old woman said, "I know that place." Then the old woman's voice changed and the dream became aggressive; the phone went dead. The dream continued and the occupant attempted to call the woman back. The woman picked up the phone and her voice was extremely evil when she said something impossible to understand. The phone conversation ended abruptly when the call turned to static. The occupant awoke suddenly to find the television playing nothing but static in the middle of the day.

The client reports not being able to get a full night's sleep for the past three months, due to the uncomfortable atmosphere in the home. The occupant is uncomfortable with the unexplained noises she hears and she often turns on the television, when it is working, to drown out the noises.

EVP captures:

Several EVPs were captured at the location, ranging from class A through C. During the process of the interview a female EVP appears that says, "I'm by Michele" referring to one of the individuals involved in the case. EVPs of children have also been captured, which correspond with the reports given by the occupants and witnesses. We have captured the voice of a child saying "Hello" and "look here," and another EVP sings, "we're out on the playground," corresponding with the client's report of seeing children on the swing set in her back yard.

One interesting EVP, the voice of a child states "We won't get in your machine." This proves true, as we have little to offer in the way of photographic evidence. On a similar instance, the voice of a female EVP is captured stating, "Be quiet…my home." Further, during the interview when we asked the occupant who lived in the home, a voice responds, "she lives here with us."

In addition, an EVP that is a bit more menacing was captured. Several voices can be heard in the single capture. In the background of the EVP, a woman is screaming, while a gruff male voice hisses, "Let her die." Shortly thereafter, a sing song voice of a male whispers, "we see you taping shut it off," and the voice is followed by the whisper of a child that states, "turn it off."

Another male EVP says, "Let me out," and a similar sounding male EVP was captured stating, "get out of here lady, I don't want you here.” Finally, a male EVP appears during a brief moment of silence and says, "…What we do at night."

Photographs:

Photographic captures are limited. One unusual pink orb was captured in the upstairs area of the location. Another white orb was captured in the doorway near the kitchen. Infrared photos revealed nothing unusual. We have included images of the newspapers dated 1914 found in the location, and the one sketch from our paranormal sketch artist, Angela Kaufmann in our gallery.

Temperature Fluctuations:

No temperature fluctuations were noted.

EMF readings:

No unusual EMF readings were recorded.

Video:

The video revealed nothing unusual.

Psychic impressions:

During the process of taking EVP samples, psychic sketch artist Angela Kauffman and another investigator reported seeing a "black shapeless streak.” A sketch of the hutch owned by the occupants reveals a side note, "Black steak flew from right to left in front room while an investigator asked, "Why won't you let them sleep?"

Clairsentient Justyn Staley's hands are cold and remain cold while standing in the kitchen of the location. Justyn also reported feeling an unexplained pain in his temple region when in the kitchen, another investigator made the same report in her notes, while having no prior knowledge of the experience Justyn had.

Several of the investigators felt that the upstairs of the location felt oppressive and the air was heavy. Several investigators report feeling uncomfortable, especially in the upstairs of the location.

Upon our arrival the television displayed nothing but static. We left it running to see if anything unusual occurred. One of our investigators believes that they saw movement of a figure across the screen, waving goodbye.

A great deal of pendulum activity is noted in various areas of the home by an investigator. At one point one our investigators asked, "Do you like to play with children?" The pendulum indicted an affirmative response.

Unusual dreams: One of our investigators had an unusual dream about the location. Having never been to the location before, the investigator recognized the back yard by what can only be explained as a Déjà Vu experience.

Conclusions: Inconclusive.

Despite the fantastic EVP captures, and our own psychic impressions, we have to deem this case scientifically inconclusive. With little to offer in the way of photographic evidence, no temperature fluctuations and no unusual video or electromagnetic field disturbances, there is no reasonable way we can assert a haunting. This does not mean that the experiences that the client is enduring are not real or of paranormal origin, it merely means that our team did not get enough scientific proof for us to be able to reasonably deem the location haunted and that we are not willing to base our conclusions on several EVPs and reported experiences alone.

Based on our feelings only, we decided to do a cleansing at the location per the client's request. The client has since reported that several days after our visit, several plastic dishes fell out of her cupboards and she is still having the sensation of being watched. We will keep in touch with the client and continue to assist both her and her family, any way possible.
