Prepare for Persecution: Forewarned is Forearmed
So, you desire to start your own ghost hunting group? Then be forewarned: starting and remaining an established group is no easy task. Besides the difficulties that may accompany group social interaction and the difficulties of acquiring the basic equipment required to do investigations, there exists the far larger problem of discriminatory harassment.
Unfortunately, there are numerous pitfalls in creating a paranormal investigative group. One such pitfall is the persecution you may receive from others whose world view does not concur with your own. Sadly, even today, you may be approached by individuals who, not only disagree with your convictions, but may openly degrade you for your interests in the paranormal. It has been said that forewarned is forearmed— when considering the establishment of your own group, you should be ever aware of the possibility that such harassment will occur. Hence, your awareness can mentally prepare you and your group members and thereby lessen the baneful affect that such discriminatory practices induce.
Every individual has the right to believe in whatever they wish to believe in. Further, every individual has the right to express their opinions openly and freely without the fear of repercussions. However, absolutely no one has the right to persecute another individual for their beliefs and/or practices. There are constructive and counterproductive means of expressing personal opinions and when individuals partake in constructive methods of disagreement, they are partaking in a mature method of discussion. This, of course does not mean that a resolution of differences may necessarily occur, but it does allow opposing viewpoints to coexist in relative harmony.
Regretfully, there exists individuals who choose the latter, who attempt manipulation by the use of sheer harassment and force and those same individuals would rather harass, degrade, and personally attack other people in the attempt to enforce their truths on other individuals. Such enforcements can, not only be irritating, but can be quite hurtful. What’s more, you may be surprised by who partakes in such practices. Individuals you may have been acquainted with for years may quite suddenly voice their opinions in an unwarranted and disparaging fashion.
It does not matter what induces such behavior, the clear fact is that it happens. What matters is how you choose to address the issue. First, although such personal attacks can be infuriating, it is imperative not to let your anger override your sense of logic. Secondly, consider the source and realize that no matter what you say or do, responding to such attacks will place you in a no win situation. Clearly, reason is not the basis of such attacks, therefore trying to reason with such individuals is fruitless. Third, be firm in your convictions and never allow what other individuals think to change who you are or what you stand for. Finally, because every situation is different, realize that you will be forced to rely on your instinct in regard to the proper handling of the situation. However, be sure to remember not to let your emotions rule your head.
In conclusion, paranormal investigation can be an exciting adventure and a journey of discovery. Just make a mental note that not everyone will welcome or appreciate your practices. With this in mind, you can curb the surprise of personal attacks and lay your focus where it is truly warranted: on the success of your endeavors.
